Advocacy Suggestions

Daily Art Advocacy

Gay Kohl has suggested this discussion between an Art teacher and their students:
“When you are in art class, you are the smartest person in the world.
You are using both sides of your brain and making decisions.
In your art, the first process is to create your designs and drawing.
You are making decisions about your composition, color, lines and shapes.
This thought process is called meta-cognition (a great 50 cent word).
During your creating, you have to analyze and compose the images of your art.
You are so smart when you create art.”

Missed Opportunities

How many times have we thought we should be advocating for Arts Education, but didn’t think we had time or appropriate connections?

Everyday, you are in a position to advocate for visual arts – in your classroom:

Never miss the opportunity to tell your students how lucky they are to attend a school that offers art… not all school districts do.

Never miss an opportunity to explain the important brain development they get from engaging in art making.

Never miss an opportunity to ask students to share with their parents what they are learning in art.

Create a web site and require students to access from home an assignment that has to have a parent signature.

Use this as an opportunity to share your arts curriculum and philosophy.

Now go out and make the most of your advocacy opportunities!
